Had a free day in Lisbon so I decided to go out to Cascais, once a royal summer retreat for the Portuguese nobility, now the perfect seaside escape for the “alfacinhas” (people of Lisbon). The historic heart of Cascais is filled with a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings, and many nice cafes and restaurants. There is also the Nossa Senhora da Luz Fortress, a marina with the blue and white Santa Marta lighthouse, an art museum, the Palacete Seixas, and an old little castle. There are many hiking and biking paths leading you to golden beaches, such as the famous Praia do Guincho.

Boca do Inferno translates to “mouth of hell” and is an archway that the waves have sculpted out of a rock formation jutting out into the ocean.

About 5 mins drive from the old center of Cascais is Praia do Guincho, lauded as the most beautiful beach in Cascais. It is often windy and wild and raw here. A surfer’s and windsurfer’s paradise with massive crashing waves.

Until the next time Portugal!
