Xiapu 2: XiaoHao, Dongbi, Nanwan, Oct 2023

XiaoHao Beach (小皓海滩) is one of my favorite photography spots in Xiapu.  When it is low tide, the beach reflects the color of the sky and and hundreds of shiny windy arteries appear.  XiaoHao is known for its shrimp seedlings.  Fishermen use large stretched out nets to catch shrimp seedlings in the shallow waters during April and May.  The catch is then carefully selected, dehydrated, pounded, and pickled.  XiaoHao resembles a beautiful watercolor painting and should not be missed.

Dongbi Village (东壁村), 45 mins east of town, is a great place to shoot the sunset.  There is a viewpoint where most people gather prior to sunset.  But we managed to convince the manager at a nearby homestay to let us shoot from their roof.  After setting up my tripod and camera equipment, I relaxed in a comfortable lounge chair sipping a freshly made iced tea.  This is my kind of photo shoot! 😃

Nanwan Seine (南灣圍網) is another iconic photography spot in Xiapu.  Dozens of seines can be seen on the tidal flat of Nanwan Village in Yantian Town (鹽田鎮南灣村).  They were originally used to raise crabs, but are now reserved for photography.  Photos of these seines have appeared in countless magazines and photography websites.  Next to it, there is a unique scenery called “Nanwan Oracle” (南灣甲骨文).  Due to the needs of crab breeding, many irregular long and short embankments were built in the local area, and they reminded one of oracle bones.

Next post will be on the Mangroves of Ewan Village as well as some of the other highlights from my short trip to Xiapu.  Stay tuned!
