Stopped by the alpine lake Basum-Tso (巴松棤), also called Draksum-Tso, on our way to Lhasa. Basum-Tso is a holy lake of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Nyingmapa, the “school of the old persons” or the red caps, is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist school and is founded here on the shores of Basum-Tso in the 7th and 8th centuries. The highlight of Basum-Tso is a small island named Tashi at the center of the lake. A two-storey wooden monastery called Tsodzong stands on the island. Pilgrims come to pray and circulate the lake. There is a sightseeing platform on the way to Draksum-Tso resort which is an ideal place to capture panoramic views of the lake. It is a pretty place but I don’t think it deserves to be one of China’s AAAAA sights.
