Xinjiang: Ziniquan & Irtysh River, Sep 2025

It is a rather long drive (6-7 hours without stopping) from Urumqi to Altay region in Northern Xinjiang.  There are several different routes and this time we chose to stop in Ziniquan and the Irtysh River near Beitun.  Ziniquan 紫泥泉, located in the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, was an important trade post established during the Qing Dynasty.  It was also a center for salt production with the area characterized by saline mudflats.

Irtysh River 額爾齊斯河, also known as the “Silver Water” is the largest tributary of the Ob River 鄂毕河.  Originating from the southern slope of the Altay Mountains in XInjiang, China, it flows into Kazakhstan, then Russia, and eventually into the Arctic Ocean.  It is the only river in China that flows into Arctic Ocean.  We stopped by one of the livestock grazing pastures along the river.

Some of the best scenery in Xinjiang is along the roads and the next post will be a collection of those captures.   Stay tuned!
