Xinjiang: Zhaosu, Jan 2026

Zhaosu Wetland Park 昭蘇濕地公園 is a national 4A-level scenic area with the largest and highest-altitude wetland in Yili, Xinjiang.  It is the “Hometown of the Heavenly Horse”.  We came here to photograph the Yili horses with performances called “Tianma (Heavenly Horse) Galloping on the Snow” 天馬踏雪 where horses gallop across the snow-covered plains like a scene from a fairy tale.  There are two 30-min sessions daily, one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon.  In the summer, there is a similar performance called “Tianma Bathing in the River” 天馬浴河 where the horses gallop along the Tekes River 特克斯河, attracting many tourists and photographers.

Due to the geological and topography of Zhaosu, there is a big difference in temperature between day and night.  Because of the low temperature at night, fog can easily form, and then the water droplets in the fog freezes resulting in rime.   Hence, Zhaosu is known for the frequent occurrence of beautiful crystal-like rime hanging from the branches.
