I had a free day in Zurich so decided to tick off another country (Country #106) from my travel list and popped over the border to the 6th smallest country in the world, Liechtenstein. Nestled in the Central European Alps, between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is a constitutional hereditary monarchy known for its picturesque alpine landscapes. I took the 1-hour train ride from Zurich to Sargans and then got a taxi to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. Alternatively, one can take the LIEmobile bus No.11.

Overlooking Vaduz is the fairytale medieval castle Schloss Vaduz, the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Even though it is closed to the public, the cilmb up offers beautiful views over the tiny capital with the Swiss alps in the back. The marked path is dotted with historical information about the royal family.

A short 20-minute walk from town is the historic wooden bridge, Alte Rheinbrucke or Old Rhine Bridge, that crosses the Rhine River linking Vaduz in Liechtenstein and Sevelen in Switzerland. It is the only remaining covered wooden bridge built in the Rhine Valley from 1867 to 1879. This bridge is the largest bridge of its kind in Europe measuring 135 meters long and 6 meters wide.

There is honestly not too much to see in Vaduz and if not for ticking off another country from my travel list, I recommend spending the time elsewhere.
From Zurich, I continued to central Switzerland using Interlaken as my base. Stay tuned!
