Bern, the “capital” of Switzerland, has one of the most beautiful UNESCO old towns in Europe with well-preserved cobblestone streets, 6 km of covered arcades, and surrounded on 3 sides by the turquoise Aare River.  Switzerland is a federal republic with Bern serving as the federal city and the seat of the national government.  The direct train from Interlaken takes less than an hour and it’s a perfect day trip and change of pace from all the mountains and nature activities.  There used to be 3 guard towers in Bern built for defense purposes in the 13th century.  Of the 3, only Kafigturm and Zytglogge remain today.  The focal point of Bern is no doubt the astronomical clock tower, Zytglogge, where crowds congregate to see the figures twirl and listen to the chimes each hour.  This clock tower was said to have helped Albert Einstein, who lived in Bern, develop his theory of relativity.  For sweeping views over the Aare River and the rooftops of the old town, hike up the lofty spire of the 15th century Munster (cathedral).  Another place for sweeping views is the Rosengarten (Rose Garden) up on the hilltop with the roses in full bloom beginning every June.  There is a Tierpark-Bern (Bear Park) where the tradition of keeping live bears, Bern’s mascots, in the city center has been going on for 500 years.
