Grindelwald & Lauterbrunnen, June 2026

If you are all about the green meadows and alpine air that Switzerland is known for, then Grindelwald is the perfect choice, only a half hour drive from Interlaken.  There is a tri-cable gondola, the Eiger Express, that goes up to Eigergletscher station for views of the glaciers.  From here, one can switch to the red Jungfrau Railway up to the summit of Europe’s highest station, Jungfraujoch.  Since I have already visited Gornergrat and seen Matterhorn, I decided just to take it easy and wander around town and admire the beautiful views.  A great way to appreciate the alpine meadows and fresh air is to take a walk along one of the many trails near the center of town such as Scheideggstrasse.  One of the best places for amazing views is at the terrace of the Belvedere Hotel in Grindelwald.  It is located up from the popular Traumhang Viewpoint.  Do stop by for a coffee.

Not far from Grindelwald is another village, Lauterbrunnen (loud springs), known as the “Valley of 72 Waterfalls”.  Most people come here to hike or take the train up to Junfgraujoch for views over the largest glacier in the Swiss Alps, the Aletsch Glacier.  The most iconic waterfall in Lauterbrunnen is Staubbach Falls which is visible from the main street with glacial water falling from a height of 297 meters.  It is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.  You can go up a flight of steps into a man-made grotto and walk behind the waterfall and enjoy panoramic views of the valley from above.  Another waterfall is the Murrenbachfall which plunges 750 meters into 5 cascades.  Trummelbach Falls, which I didn’t go, is comprised of a series of 10 waterfalls hidden within the mountains.  There is an elevator that will take you up to a platform where you can go through tunnels to access the falls.  The town was filled with tourists so a bit unpleasant.  After a brief stop, I decided to head back to Interlaken.

That’s a wrap for my visit to Switzerland.  It is definitely a very beautiful place but the people are a bit too cold and rigid for my liking.  Don’t get me wrong, I have good friends who are Swiss.  But from my experience this time,  not only are things very expensive, the service in general is very average.  Overall, I didn’t feel welcomed and I think it is not a great place for visitors.
