Tianshui: Fuxi Temple and Jingtusi Temple, Aug 2026

I arrived Tianshui in southern Gansu Province to find out that Maijishan Grottoes, like most other scenic areas in the province, has been closed due to rain for 4 days already.  I was told that once the weather clears and becomes sunny for a day, the grottoes usually open the next day.  While waiting, I visited two of the well-known temples in the area: Fuxi Temple 伏羲寺 and Jingtusi Temple 淨土寺.  I stayed at the Tianshui Jiafu Hotel 天水嘉孚酒店 which is centrally located but a bit dated.

Fuxi Temple 伏羲廟
Fuxi Temple 伏羲廟 is an ancient temple dedicated to Fuxi.  This is actually the first time I heard of Fuxi who is regarded as a figure in traditional Chinese mythology and is honored as “the first ancestor of China” and “the founder of the eight trigrams or bagua 八卦”.  Fuxi Temple is an important religious place to worship Fuxi and is also one of the cultural heritages of Tianshui City.  The building style of Fuxi Temple is simple and elegant.  There are statues and tablets of Fuxi in the temple.  There are also many ancient cultural relics and historical documents preserved in the temple museum, demonstrating the important position and influence of Fuxi in Chinese culture.

This tree at Fuxi Temple 伏羲廟 got knocked down by thunder but didn’t die.  Supported by the broken column and the roof of the temple, its branches continue to grow.  Quite amazing!

Jingtusi Temple 淨土寺
Jingtusi Temple 淨土寺 is a Buddhist temple with a long history.  Built in the Tang Dynasty, Jingtusi Temple is one of the oldest temples in Tianshui City and one of the important Buddhist holy places in Gansu Province.  The architectural style of the temple is simple and elegant, reflecting the characteristics of traditional Chinese temples, and visitors can feel the peaceful atmosphere here.  The temple is built on a mountain, and the scenery changes with the seasons.  Spring and autumn, in particular, offer a stunning display of natural beauty that attracts many tourists to come and enjoy the sights.  There are also many precious Buddhist relics and historical documents in the temple, demonstrating the important position of Jingtusi Temple in the inheritance of Buddhist culture.

Since it was a sunny day, I assumed that Maijishan Grottoes will reopen the next day.  Unfortunately, the grottoes remained closed but its surrounding scenic areas reopened.  Stay tuned!
