Dazu Rock Carvings, Sep 2026

About 1.5 hour from Chongqing is the UNESCO Dazu Rock Carvings 大足石刻 featuring 75 cave temples with over 50,000 statues and 100,000 epigraphs.  These religious cliff carvings, mostly Buddhist with some Confucian and Taoist themed, were done during the late Tang Dynasty to the early Song Dynasty.  It is said that these cliff carvings were started by Wei Junjing, the prefect of Changzhou and a military commander, who occupied Dazu during the chaos and political unrest after the An-shi Rebellion (775-763 AD).  He feared he would go to hell for his killlings and so commissioned painters and craftsmen to carve statues of Buddha on Beishan Mountain.  Later in the Southern Song Dynasty, Zhao Zhifeng, the “Sixth Grandmaster of Tantric Buddhism”, built a large-scale Tantric ashram here in the form of stone carvings.  There are no other such large-scale rock carvings and grotto art in China or in the world after Dazu Rock Carvings.  There are 102 rock carving sites in Dazu with the Baodingshan Rock Carvings 寶頂山 and Beishan Rock Carvings 北山 being the most popular.  Others inclue Nanshan 南山, Shimenshan 石门山, and Shizhuanshan 石篆山 which are all temporarily closed to the public.  I highly recommend hiring a guide to explain the various rock carvings.  The guide suggested starting the visit in the earlier Beishan caves before visiting the later and better-preserved rock carvings of Baodingshan.

Beishan Rock Carvings 北山
Beishan Rock Carvings 北山 are the earlier Dazu Rock Carvings commissioned by Wei Junjing in 892 AD, about 20 minutes away from Baodingshan Rock Carvings.  The rock carvings here are divided into No.1-100 in the south section and No.101-290 in the north section.  The grottoes here are very dense, like a bee hive, with over 5,000 statues that are intricately carved and colorful.  The highlight of Beishan rock carvings are the statues of Avalokitesvara which are ornamental with different looks and poses such as Avalokitesvara with a Rosary, Avalokitesvara Watching the Moon Reflection in the Water, and Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara.  If you have enough time and stamina, don’t forget to visit the Duobao Pagoda (多宝塔) to see the giant cliff statues of Beishan, the Two Buddhas of the North Pagoda (unfortunately under restoration during my visit).

Revolving Sutra Repository Cave is widely regarded as a pinnacle of Song Dynasty grotto and sculptural art.  At the heart of the cave stands an octagonal stone-carved central pillar acting as a revolving sutra repository.

Baodingshan Rock Carvings 寶頂山
Baodingshan 寶頂山 is the premier attraction in Dazu built in the Southern Song Dynasty.  It was designed by Zhao Zhifeng, the “Sixth Grandmaster of Tantric Buddhism”, and carved under his supervision for over 70 years from the late 12th century.  There is an old saying that goes “Go North, climb Ermei Mountain; Go South, reach the Baoding Mountain.”  The centerpiece of the Baodingshan rock carvings is the U-shaped Dafowan 大佛湾 or Great Buddha Bend that can be divided into the large and small bend with a Shengshou Temple containing an Avalokitesvara with a Thousand Hands in the middle.  There are over 6,000 statues here and like a picture scroll, the content of Baodingshan rock carvings is mainly Buddhist scripture stories, each niche related to the other but not identical.  Some of the highlights are the Niche of 31-meter long Sakyamuni Entering Nirvana, Avalokitesvara with Thousand Hands, the Buddhist Wheel of LIfe, and the Cave of Full Enlightment.  The first tableux you will come across depicts scenes from hell, followed by other Buddhist stories such as Nirvana after Death, the Peacock King, and the Taming of the Wild Ox.  The second part, Little Buddha Bend, with highlights being the Wheel of Life, and the Protectors of Buddhist Law.  There is a scenic bus that takes you from the entrance to the Museum of Dazu, Dafowan, and Shenshou Temple.

Yuanjue Cave 圓覺洞 uses skylights to bring our attention to the kneeling figure in the otherwise dim cave.  There is also a concealed drainage system in the cave called “Divine Dragon Spitting Water.”

The Ox herding parable illustrates the process of enlightenment through the images of herding a wild ox.  As the herdsman gradually tames his wild ox, so does the spiritual seeker tame his unruly mind through the practice of Zen.

Shakyamuni entering Nirvana represents an important part of Buddhist belief when the physical body of someone who has achieved enlightenment dies. Shakyamuni is accompanied by his Bodhisattvas and other attendants. It is said that he was giving a lecture, turned to lie down, and then entered Nirvana.

Dazu Rock Carvings is much smaller than I expected.  After having been to Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, Dazu is somewhat less impressive but I do like how the statues are carved to all lean out over the viewer.  It is worth a quick visit if you are in Chongqing.
